People would call him John or Quince thinking that he had his fathers name also. There are some pictures of him when he was younger that had JR on them. JQ was named by his mother while his father was away on the RailRoad. She had named him Thomas Lee. But when his father got home he looked at him and said "no that is little JQ" and that is what his name has been ever since.
